A judge vacated the murder convictions of two men who have spent most of the past 20 years in prison for the slaying of a college student in Albany in February 1997.

Albany Supreme Court Justice Thomas Breslin acted Thursday on a motion by Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares’ office to dismiss the murder charges against Carl Dukes, 39, and Lavell Jones, 38. Soares’ chief assistant, David Rossi, told Breslin that a former Albany resident has confessed to the killing of state University at Albany student Erik Mitchell.
