As every boxing fan knows, a referee can make a big difference in a fierce fight.

Just ask name partners Paul Napoli and Marc Bern of Napoli Bern, whose New York mass torts and personal injury firm is in the midst of an epic breakup. Mark Zauderer, a court-appointed referee with a broad mandate to assist in winding down the firm, is presiding over a litany of disputes between the partners. Over the past year Zauderer has written close to 20 court decisions related to Napoli Bern, which once boasted up to 80 attorneys in multiple offices.
