A former top Assembly staffer on a state commission that is empowered to grant raises to state legislators is advocating for a 48 percent pay increase.

Roman Hedges said the pay hike would mirror the increases provided in contracts the state has negotiated with the Public Employees Federation since 1999, the last year that members of the Assembly and state Senate received raises. Their $79,500 annual base salaries would rise to $116,900 under the proposed raise.Hedges argued for the increase during the July 26 meeting of the Commission on Legislative, Judicial and Executive Compensation. Hedges is the retired former secretary to the state Assembly’s Ways and Means Committee and was appointed to the panel by the Assembly’s speaker.
