The $1,000-a-month award in temporary maintenance to the wife of a divorcing couple was invalid because it was imposed without explanation of why state guidelines were not followed, an appeals court ruled Thursday.

The husband in the divorce action, Anonymous v. Anonymous, 308500/11, was directed in a 2011 preliminary conference order to pay all household expenses and costs related to the care of the couple’s child, who was 5 when the divorce action began.
