A former New York banker on trial for allegedly passing confidential corporate-merger information to his father testified Thursday that he never gave his father information “so that he could trade on it.”

During several hours of direct-examination testimony, Sean Stewart, 35, made a high-stakes bid to convince a federal jury in Manhattan that he had only mentioned the names of health care companies involved in pre-merger activity during natural father-son conversations and never with the intent to commit insider trading.
