Virginia state law recognizes that the successor company to old General Motors has a post-sale duty to warn about a dangerous defect in a GM car, a federal judge in New York held Monday.

Southern District Judge Jesse Furman said the next plaintiff in the bellwether trials over defective ignition switches can pursue punitive damages against new GM, the post-bankruptcy successor to old GM.
