When the first plane hit the north tower at the World Trade Center, 10 New York state court officers commandeered a jury minibus at 111 Centre St. and raced to the scene to help the rescue effort. Some were emergency medical technicians who grabbed their first-aid gear to treat the wounded at the scene of what they thought was an accidental plane crash.
But by the time they arrived, the South Tower had been hit by a second plane. The officers were already at work when the south tower collapsed and, in the words of one officer, “everything went black.”
