ALBANY — The same renown that propelled a matrimonial lawyer to prominence before he was disbarred in New York in 2002 is now, perversely, preventing his reinstatement, his attorney argued before the state’s highest court.

Joel Brandes continues to be falsely accused of illegally practicing law through the eponymous legal research and drafting services company he has operated from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, since the year after he was disbarred in New York, his lawyer, Chris McDonough, told the Court of Appeals.
