New York City has received the final payment owed to recover the money it spent to strip asbestos from city buildings. The payment capped more than three decades of work by city attorneys that raked in more than $136 million in damages.

“This recovery will help reduce the enormous bill the city incurred over the years identifying, abating and removing asbestos hazards from its facilities,” said Alan Kleinman, senior counsel to the city’s Law Department, in a news release.
