First-year attorneys in any practice setting can feel overwhelmed and underqualified. This anxiety isn’t limited to new lawyers. A quick review of the American Bar Association’s website reveals a wealth of resources and information on managing stress for lawyers at all levels.
Certainly, you can find lots of tips on how to get a handle on your professional life. Nuggets of advice like “find a mentor, be punctual, respect the support staff,” are as true now as when I started out. But while heeding this guidance will help advance your career, it won’t help you deal with the stress of incessant demands of legal practice barreling down on you. After decades in the law, I now realize that the one piece of truly useful advice I never got was: “Taking responsibility for your work will better allow you to manage your time.”
