Airbnb and its critics are seeking to get New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s attention with 11th-hour comments about legislation on his desk that would create stiff penalties for individuals who advertise units that aren’t legally available in the state through online home-sharing services.
The state Legislature on Tuesday sent Cuomo a bill imposing fines of up to $7,500 for repeatedly listing units on Airbnb, HomeAway.com and other internet-based accommodations services whose rentals would violate laws limiting the short-term leasing of dwellings in multiple-unit buildings (NYLJ, June 23).
