The New York Times has reported that Reid Hoffman, a co-founder of LinkedIn offered to give $5 million to charity if Donald Trump released his tax returns before the first presidential debate (New York Times, Sept. 13, 2016). Trump didn’t release his tax returns.

If Trump had released his tax returns: (1) What would have been the tax implications for him? (2) What would have been the tax implications for the donor?
