Improper pressure from a trial judge led a defendant to plead guilty to manslaughter, a unanimous appeals court has found in ordering the plea vacated.

The Appellate Division, Fourth Department, panel ruled that Onondaga County Court Judge Thomas Miller made comments to defendant Spencer Williams that effectively coerced Williams into entering a guilty plea to a first-degree manslaughter charge. Miller sentenced him to 25 years in prison.
