A corporate accountant admitted Monday to stealing at least $3.1 million from agribusiness giant Cargill, Inc., and causing $25 million in losses to the privately held company’s grain shipping operations at the Port of Albany.

Diane Backis, of Athens, New York, pleaded guilty Monday in federal court in Albany to mail fraud and filing a false income tax return. Northern District U.S. Attorney Richard Hartunian said Backis diverted customer payments to her own accounts for 10 years and caused at least $25 million in losses to the Minnesota-based company.
