Five adjectives appear in Judiciary Law §487. Two of them are neutral: “own,” “penal.” The other three favor the plaintiff side of the caption.

“Treble” modifies “damages,” and treble damages are the biggest boost to civil litigation that American law offers plaintiffs. Next comes “civil,” which modifies “action” to say that the statute recognizes a private right to recover that arises when an attorney involved in litigation commits this crime. Then “answerable,” an obligation that burdens defendants.
