The Southern District played host this year to a series of bellwether cases from across the country involving defective ignition switches in General Motors cars. Plaintiffs in the cases said GM should be held liable for not recalling cars with defective switches faster and then launching a massive cover-up to dodge liability.

The bellwethers were intended to set the stage for settling hundreds of cases in the multi-district litigation over economic damages, personal injury and wrongful death claims stemming from defects in old GM cars.
