The back-to-back convictions of New York state’s most powerful legislators—Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate majority leader Dean Skelos—launched a fresh call to end political corruption, “business as usual” in Albany.

Both men were handed federal prison terms in May. Skelos, a Long Island Republican who was found guilty of abusing his position to extort bribes and no-show jobs and perks for his son, was sentenced to 5 years (his son, Adam Skelos, got 6 1/2 years).
