Last February, the New York state courts launched the Excellence Initiative, a system-wide campaign to achieve and maintain operational and decisional excellence. One of the prevailing themes of the Excellence Initiative is that justice delayed is justice denied; citizens and litigants deserve to have their cases heard and resolved in a fair, timely and efficient manner.

The Excellence Initiative began with a comprehensive evaluation of court operations around the state, followed by collective and individual meetings with administrative judges to review performance data and trends in their courts and districts. At these meetings, we developed local strategies to improve promptness and productivity, cut backlogs and delays, and provide better services to the public in every courthouse.
