It’s been a tradition in New York for its senior U.S. senator to choose new U.S. attorneys. But with a Democrat holding the seat and a Republican president in the White House, prominent GOP politicians may be called upon to choose a replacement for Eastern District U.S. Attorney Robert Capers, legal observers say.

In December, after a meeting in Trump Tower during the transition period, President Donald Trump said that, for the time being, he would like to keep Southern District U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara.
