A nurse who claimed her workplace turned hostile after she reported suspicions that an inmate in her care had been injured by a prison guard cannot sue her former employer for gender discrimination under Title VII of the federal Civil Rights Act, a judge ruled.

Western District Judge William Skretny said precedents within the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit made clear that Title VII protections are for those discriminated against based on their membership in a protected class, such as race, color, religion, gender or national origin.
