As everyone knows, 40 Centre St., now the Thurgood Marshall U.S. Courthouse, stands on Foley Square and was built as the seat of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Southern District of New York. Less well-known is that the immediate environs are of unusual interest in the history of the city.
