As Beethoven labored to write his great compositions and score them for a hundred-member orchestra, he could not have imagined that some of his most monumental works would one day be reduced to a five- or 10-second ring tone played out on a mobile telephone handset.

And while Beethoven is not around any more to seek royalties for the use of his compositions, contemporary artists and their representatives have recently come to realize that the licensing of musical compositions for use as downloadable cellphone ring tones has the potential to yield a significant income stream. In this, as in so many other things, the Internet has become the driving force that has made this new income stream possible.
