JEAN A. O’HARE depends on the kindness of a band of “angels,” the informal group of private firm lawyers and business executives she has formed that has worked behind the scenes since last year’s terrorist attacks on New York City to help suddenly overwhelmed nonprofit legal providers.

Ms. O’Hare is a senior corporate counsel at Pfizer Inc., and possibly the only in-house lawyer at a major American corporation to devote her energies entirely to free legal service.
