In an unusual joint opinion, two Southern District judges have found that parents may appear pro se in federal court on behalf of their children to appeal the denial of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

Judges Denny Chin and Alvin K. Hellerstein — issuing a single decision arising from two separate though similar cases — found that despite the argument of the U.S. Attorney’s office, case law and the interests of justice should allow courts to hear such parental appeals.
