Blackstone Group LP, an international investment and advisory firm, has acquired MeriStar Hospitality Corp., a hotel real estate investment trust and management company, for $2.6 billion. MeriStar, which owns 57 hotels operating under the Hilton, Holiday Inn, Sheraton and Weston brands, represents Blackstone's fifth hotel takeover in the past year. Also, Coherent Inc., which designs and sells lasers and precision optics, has acquired Excel Technology Inc. in an all-cash transaction valued at $376 million.
