A Middlesex County, N.J., jury awarded $8.4 million on Jan. 22 on a pair of underinsured motorist claims by a woman who was in two auto accidents in Ingato v. New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Co. But her actual recovery will be $470,900 because of limits on her underinsured motorist coverage.

Maria Ingato, now 56, was in a rear-end accident on Route 9 in Howell, N.J., in May 2005. She experienced back and neck pain and a hernia at L4-5, and tears and protrusion at C2-3. She underwent physical therapy and massage, and was prescribed home traction for radiating pain in her right arm, according to her lawyer, Edward Rebenack of Rebenack, Aronow & Mascolo in New Brunswick, N.J.
