NJSBA volunteers help former prisoners

In response to the increasing legal needs of former prisoners re-entering society, the New Jersey State Bar Association in February organized a continuing legal education seminar and training session. The event taught attorneys what they needed to know to help people who have served their time and need assistance getting their lives started again.

The attorneys were trained in areas including family law, municipal court, public benefits and procedural benefits.

In the months since the training was held, nearly two dozen NJSBA members have volunteered to assist former prisoners through the association's Young Lawyers Division's Prisoner Reentry Program, which is affiliated with Martin's Place in Jersey City.
