Prescription drug company Omnicare Inc. agreed to an $8 million settlement this week to end a whistleblower claim that accused it of falsely billing Medicare and Medicaid in 28 states for a different drug than actually dispensed.

The false claims allegedly generated by the scheme ran into the billions of dollars, according to a 66-page lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in New Jersey in February 2014. The suit was filed under the False Claims Act.

The plot was discovered by two pharmacists working at an Omnicare facility in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, according to the lawsuit. Those pharmacists, Elizabeth Corsi and Christopher Ezzie, were allegedly fired after informing Omnicare.
