Bruce Nagel of Nagel Rice in Roseland has developed a reputation for obtaining large recoveries. And in 2016, he was involved in cases that yielded the highest known settlement and verdict of the year. Also last year, Nagel obtained a partial settlement on behalf of the family of Dustin Friedland, a New Jersey lawyer shot and killed during a carjacking at the Mall at Short Hills. Nagel's practice is not limited to injury matters: He also has handled significant consumer class actions and fiduciary cases of late.

Distinguished Leaders in many cases have praiseworthy careers, but most importantly they continue to be leaders in the profession. What are some of your proudest recent achievements?

1. Obtaining medical coverage for eating disorder treatment for 4 million New Jersey families by successfully litigating three class actions against leading carriers; 2. litigating the landmark natural resource damage actions on behalf of the State of New Jersey and recovering over $230 million, including the $225 million Exxon-Mobil settlement; 3. In 2016, having the No. 1 tort settlement of $18.5 million in medical malpractice, and also winning $27 million in jury verdicts, including a $16 million breach of fiduciary duty case against a unit of Goldman-Sachs; 4. Ten-year litigation against the U.S. companies that supported apartheid in South Africa after the U.N. sanctions, which stands as one of the leading human rights cases in history.
