Republican Gov. Chris Christie on Friday vetoed legislation that would have imposed taxes on the state's burgeoning “home-sharing” industry.

The Democrat-controlled Legislature had approved the legislation, A-4587, along party lines. The measure would have imposed state sales and occupancy taxes on the operators of internet vacation rental services such as Airbnb, as well as other taxes, depending on the particular community.

“I strongly believe that levying new taxes on our already overtaxed residents is not the answer to the state's fiscal problems,” Christie said in his veto statement, adding that it would disproportionately affect Shore towns and other tourist regions.
