Life has changed in recent years for Marie Lihotz and Raymond Batten, who each had decades-long careers as New Jersey state judges and more recently retired to join Archer & Greiner, where they were tasked with building an alternative dispute resolution practice. Coming in with no book of business in the traditional sense, reputation means a lot. And leaving behind colleagues on the bench can be just as challenging as building the practice, they say. With ADR practices and retired jurists seemingly more popular than ever for law firms in New Jersey and beyond, it's a dynamic playing out at many firms.
