The New Jersey State Bar Association's Board of Trustees met Feb. 9 at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick to address a range of issues, including the swearing in of a new trustee from Union County, the approval of nationally recognized speakers for continuing legal education seminars and positions on pending legislation.

New trustee David L. Wikstrom, a shareholder with Javerbaum Wurgaft Hicks Kahn Wikstrom & Sinins, P.C, was sworn in to fill the Union County seat on the Board of Trustees. The seat became vacant after Marc Brown became a superior court judge.

In addition, the trustees agreed to bring two nationally respected speakers to New Jersey for continuing legal education seminars. Michael P. Cash, a corporate lawyer who has represented Exxon Mobil, PetSmart and others, will discuss trial tips, tactics and tales from the corporate counsel world. In addition, Samuel D. Hodge will address medicine for lawyers. Hodge teaches law and anatomy at Temple University and is the author of several books about the intersection of law and medicine. Information about the programs will be available soon at njicle.com

Finally, the board voted to support three pending bills in the state Legislature. One (A-289) provides civil immunity to licensed healthcare professionals who provide care at healthcare facilities for no compensation. Another (A-864) expands the types of abusive actions that constitute domestic violence. In addition, the association will support a measure (S-1007) that prohibits unfair discrimination in issuing or rating life insurance policies based on transgender status or certain gender identity information.
