Hispanic Bar Installs Lopez as President
The Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey held its 39th annual installation and swearing-in ceremony at the Pleasantdale Château in West Orange on Oct. 24, 2018. Julia A. López of Reed Smith, a Guatemalan immigrant, was sworn in as president. During her remarks, López announced the year's theme for the HBA-NJ: “Diversity Makes America Great.” U.S. District Judge Esther Salas of the District of New Jersey swore in the officers and trustees. Albertina “Abby” Webb, vice president for the southern region of the HBA-NJ and a partner at LaRocca Hornik Rosen Greenberg & Patti, served as mistress of ceremonies at the event, which had 400 guests, according to a release. Immediate past president Hector D. Ruiz of Walsh Pizzi O'Reilly Falanga, and Jennifer Salinas, national president of the Hispanic National Bar Association and executive director of intellectual property litigation at Lenovo, made remarks. Also recognized, with the “Corazon Del HBA-NJ Award,” were Cristal Lambert, HBA-NJ treasurer and legal counsel at Bed Bath & Beyond Inc., and Jacqueline S. Peña, HBA-NJ membership secretary and counsel at Travelers Insurance.
Also in attendance were: Assemblywoman Annette Quijano; Senior Judge Julio M. Fuentes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit; Chief Judge Jose L. Linares of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey; and several HNBA leaders, including Irene Oria, president-elect and special counsel at Stroock, Stroock & Lavan, Miguel Alexander Pozo, HBA-NJ past president and member of Cozen O'Connor's Minneapolis office, and Pedro J. Torres-Díaz, HNBA past president and a principal in the San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Miami offices of Jackson Lewis. Students from the organization's American Dream Pipeline Program in Union City and Passaic also attended the event.
|Schenck Price Wears Jeans for Breast Cancer Awareness
Every Friday during October, Schenck, Price, Smith & King sponsored “wear jeans to work” day in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month. With a donation to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, each donor was entitled to wear jeans on those days. Many of Schenck Price's attorneys and staff showed their support for the initiative by wearing jeans and/or pink, the firm said.

The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The case is 1:24-cv-07594, Roy v. Ittycheria et al.

The suit was filed Sept. 7 in Wisconsin Western District Court by Levine Eisberner LLC and Siri & Glimstad on behalf of a project manager who claims that he was wrongfully terminated after applying for a religious exemption to the defendant's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. David X. Sullivan, Thomas J. Finn and Gregory A. Hall from McCarter & English have entered appearances for Sunrun Installation Services in a pending civil rights lawsuit. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer, is 3:24-cv-01423, Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.
