Pro Bono Partnership Celebrates 21st Anniversary
The Pro Bono Partnership celebrated its 21st anniversary at a Oct. 17, 2018 gala at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York. According to the partnership, the event raised more than $1.8 million for its programs, with donations from event honorees and volunteer lawyers, law firm and corporate executives, and clients. The partnership said in a statement that the funds raised will allow for the provision of more than $9.7 million in free legal services. T he Aetna Law & Regulatory Affairs Department was honored at the event with the 2018 “Champion Award.” Thomas J. Sabatino Jr. , executive vice president and general counsel at Aetna Inc., accepted the award, stating: ”We are fortunate that we are armed with knowledge and experience about the law. For those who don't have these skills, the legal system can be a bewildering place. And for those who face these challenges without the ability to pay for them, or even know where to go for help, it can seem like a truly daunting and hopeless situation.” The 2018 “Pro Bono Champion Award” was presented to Aetna Inc. and Thomas J. Reid , managing partner of Davis Polk & Wardwell “It is truly humbling to be honored by an organization that does so much and is so central to providing lawyers with the opportunity to do pro bono work and to make a difference in the world.” Pro Bono Partnership Executive Director Nancy Eberhardt added: “I continue to be inspired and energized every day by my respect and admiration for the nonprofits we serve.” The even was supported by: g ala chair Jonathan Mothner , executive vice president, general counsel and secretary of Synchrony Financial; dinner chairs Kimberley D. The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024.
