We are confronted daily with news about a border wall with Mexico, anti-immigration policies, white nationalism, nativism and extremism here and around the world. Learn about these topical issues from the lawyers, policymakers and thought leaders who work on them every day at the New Jersey State Bar Association's Diversity Summit on June 26 at the New Jersey Law Center.

The daylong conference titled “Diversity at a Crossroads: The Global Rise of Nativism, Nationalism and Extremism,” will feature panels that cover a range of topics, from the future of U.S. immigration to the role of the lawyer in combatting extremism and hate. Robert L. Lattimer, a diversity studies scholar at Rutgers University, will kick off the event with a look at diversity in America and how it is transforming society.

It will be followed by a session called “Closing the Borders? The Future of U.S. Immigration and Citizenship in the Wake of Nationalism and Nativism Trends.” Michael Noriega, a former chair of the NJSBA's Immigration Law Section, Asma Warsi and Adalgiza Nunez will be on the panel.

Other presentations will include a discussion by Amy Feinman, the Northeast Area Civil Rights Counsel of the Anti Defamation League, on “Mainstreaming Hate: The Anti-Immigrant Movement in the U.S.,” “Media and Reporting on the Rise of Extremism,” will be moderated by Maria Vallejo, a co-chair of the NJSBA's Diversity Committee, and include reporter Hannan Adely of the Bergen Record and Lauren James-Weir. Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes will discuss “Reports from the Frontlines: Prosecuting Hate, Bias, and Intimidation While Respecting Free Speech,” and Raymond M. Brown will present “Where Do We Go From Here? The Role of the Lawyer in Combatting Extremism and Hate.”
