From free legal help for children fleeing violence in their home countries to a lifetime of career achievements, dozens of attorneys, judges and law firms will be honored this fall for their contributions to the legal system at two major New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA) awards events.

On Oct. 23, the New Jersey Commission on Professionalism in the Law will recognize members of the legal community who have demonstrated the highest standards of professionalism at an awards luncheon in Edison.

At the event, the late Jerome B. Simandle, a retired chief federal judge, will be posthumously honored with the Daniel J. O'Hern Award, which honors a lawyer who has exhibited a commitment to the highest ideals of professionalism along with significant career achievements and service to the bar.

The Charles J. Hollenbeck Award will be given to Tracy M. Thompson, New Jersey's acting insurance fraud prosecutor and an assistant attorney general in the division of criminal justice. Thompson is an NJSBA trustee. The award honors a lawyer who has served in the legal profession with diligence, competence and dedication through employment by a government agency or an organization that serves the needs of the legal community.

The Lighthouse Award will be presented to William R. Holzapfel, an attorney for the city of Elizabeth. The award honors a lawyer whose professional and community-based efforts serve as an inspiration to colleagues.

The Professional Lawyer of the Year Awards will be presented by the state's 21 county bar associations and 14 affinity bar associations at the event.

The NJSBA will present the 2019 Pro Bono Awards on Oct. 24 at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick. The awards recognize exemplary pro bono work that has a significant impact on access to justice for underserved communities in New Jersey.

Kaitlyn Stone, an attorney with Drinker, Biddle and Reath in Florham Park, and David F. Roeber, an attorney with Stradley, Rono, Stevens and Young in Cherry Hill, will receive the New Attorney Awards.

Stone is a pro bono volunteer with Volunteer Lawyers for Justice and Legal Services of Northwest New Jersey, where since 2015 she has helped more than 80 low-income clients expunge criminal records, helping them overcome one of the most challenging obstacles to successful community reintegration.

Roeber helped launch UrbanPromise Legal Clinic, where, as lead attorney, he provided legal support to more than 130 low-income individuals in Camden and surrounding communities.

The Nissenbaum Law Group in Union will receive the Law Firm/Corporate Legal Department Award for small firms. Nissenbaum formed a team that provides legal services to nonprofit organizations that advocate for social justice, including UU FaithAction NJ, Salvation and Social Justice, and American Civil Liberties Union–NJ.

DLA Piper in Short Hills will receive the Law Firm/Corporate Legal Department Award for large firms. DLA Piper provided legal services to Kids in Need of Defense, which serves immigrant and refugee children in the United States.
