James “Jim” Johnson is leaving the New Jersey governor’s office to become the new corporation counsel for New York City, where he’ll lead the city’s Law Department and oversee the work of hundreds of lawyers.

“It’s a phenomenal department. We are largely the law firm for the city,” Johnson said in an interview. “We are one of, if not, the nation’s largest public interest law firm.”
