The members of the John C. Lifland American Inn of Court announced that president John C. Lifland , retired U.S. district judge for the District of New Jersey, was awarded the 2019 A. Sherman Christensen Award of the American Inns of Court Foundation for distinguished, exceptional and significant leadership to the American Inns of Court movement. T he award was presented to Lifland during a "Celebration of Excellence" event on Oct. 26 at the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. Judge Richard Linn , senior judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, said, "Through Judge Lifland's leadership, the Lifland Inn was and remains the gold standard of the American Inn of Court envisioned by Chief Justice Warren Burger." U.S. District Judge Stanley R. Chesler , who is a leader of the Lifland Inn, said in a statement that Lifland's "extraordinary vision and leadership, and the success of the Inn for more than 25 years, has had a demonstrable impact on the quality of advocacy, professionalism and ethics in our legal community." Retired U.S. Chief District Judge John W. Bissell said of Lifland, his longtime friend and former colleague, said "extraordinary gesture" of renaming the Lifland Inn in his honor in 2004 "reflects both his significant mentoring efforts as a teaching master and the esteem in which he is held by the members of the Lifland Inn." Lifland acknowledged and thanked those contributing to the success and influence of the Lifland Inn over its 27 years. Later, in an address to the Inn on Nov. 11, Liflland said his receipt of the award "could not have happened without the participation, efforts and devotion of the members of our Inn, many of whom have been aboard from the beginning, 27 years ago." |
