Gibbons Employees Raise $40K-Plus for Newark Fresh Air Fund
On June 19, Gibbons capped off a week-long, firmwide virtual fundraising effort led by the Gibbons Diversity Initiative to benefit the Newark Fresh Air Fund, collecting more than $40,000 in donations from individual employees, the firm announced. The donations helped make up some of the resources the Fresh Air Fund would otherwise have received from the annual "Battle of the Barristers" charity softball tournament, which was canceled this year due to COVID-19, the firm said.
"These numbers bear out our employees' dedication to the City of Newark and their desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of its residents," said Patrick C. Dunican Jr., chairman and managing partner, in a statement.
The "Battle of the Barristers" tournament, usually held in early summer, involves area law firms and sometimes in-house legal departments who field softball teams for a series of games. The event, according to Gibbons, typically raises upward of $100,000 for the Fresh Air Fund, which each summer provides camping and learning experiences to several hundred inner-city children from the greater Newark area. Gibbons has long supported the fund. The
Gibbons partner Michael R. Griffinger founded the tournament and missed only one out of the 33 tournaments that have been held so far, the firm said. However, with the cancellation of the 2020 tournament, the Fresh Air Fund could not count on tournament proceeds. So the Gibbons Diversity Initiative on June 12 announced the fundraising effort, modeled after the firm's longstanding "Jeans Days for Charity." The effort culminated on Friday, June 19—Juneteenth—with a "Virtual Jeans Day" benefiting the Fresh Air Fund. The event was virtual because the firm was closed to commemorate the Juneteenth holiday, and because most Gibbons employees continue to work from home, the firm said. Also, Dunican and Griffinger offered to personally match every dollar collected, the firm said.
