The state court system in New Jersey is about to conduct its first jury trial in six months, while U.S. district courts in the state have opted to push back the resumption of jury trials until January 2021.

The state court’s decision to move ahead cites the rights of criminal defendants, including 2,500 who have been indicted and are in jail awaiting trial, as well as the rights of crime victims, who are seeking access to the courts to complete a step in their recovery. The state judiciary also cited COVID-19′s generation of delays in administering justice, including more than 9,000 cases awaiting trial.
