Our annual NJ Law supplement—which features the Largest Law Firms listing, and repackages some of our most important data projects from earlier in the year—looks similar to prior years, but of course 2020 has been different.

It's interesting to see the way in which the data bears out that difference, and in many cases, doesn't bear it out. In all cases, the data raises important issues and trends to track going forward, particularly in a pandemic year.

For instance, does our census data indicate a levelling off of attorney population? Lawyer demographics data from the New Jersey Office of Attorney Ethics shows the state's attorney population has hovered between 98,000 and 98,700 over the past four years. Meanwhile, our Largest Law Firms listing (which lists approximately the largest 100 offices in the state) saw a year-over-year increase in the median law office size—to 44.5 from 41.
