A man whose diagnosis of bladder cancer was delayed agreed to a $1.25 million settlement in his Essex County medical malpractice suit, Wechsler v. Lefkon, M.D., on Oct. 29.

Alan Wechsler, now 73, visited urologist Bruce Lefkon with complaints of abnormal bleeding and incomplete bladder emptying in early 2017. He underwent a urinalysis test that showed abnormal cell growth. Wechsler was prescribed antibiotics, with no abatement of symptoms. Almost a year later, in December 2017, he had a bladder scan and urine cytology that showed atypical urothelial cells, and in February 2018 another test showed even more atypical cells. He was diagnosed with a bladder tumor and cancer had spread to the pelvic bone and pelvic lymph nodes, said Bruce Nagel of Nagel Rice in Roseland, who represented Wechsler.
