On more than one occasion we have urged the U.S. Supreme Court to allow cameras in the courtroom so that the public can witness the proceedings as they occur. To the present day, for reasons that have never impressed us as valid, the court has steadfastly declined to permit that. Now, because of COVID-19, for the first time in history, the court has been conducting arguments via telephone. It obviously avoids the necessity of adjourning cases for who knows how long. We take this opportunity to suggest that, while unfortunate circumstances have generated this innovation, the court take an additional constructive step forward and finally arrange for more than the relative handful of people who can fit in the courtroom to know what is going on while it is happening.
