A federal judge in New Jersey has issued a dressing down to lawyers for Torrent Pharmaceuticals for wrongly designating discovery materials as confidential in the Valsartan multidistrict litigation.

Torrent’s lawyers sought confidential status for “routine business communications” produced in discovery, but it is not entitled to such protection “merely because a document may be harmful, uncomfortable or embarrassing,” U.S. Magistrate Judge Joel Schneider ruled Friday in the Valsartan MDL.
