It was very disturbing for all of us to see 25,000 armed troops in our nation’s capital and equally disturbing why they had to be there. Based on our education and study of history since childhood, none of us could have imagined that could have happened in this country and in the city which has served as the face of democracy in the modern era. Notwithstanding the events which occurred surrounding the election, including those at the Capitol building itself on Jan. 6, we managed to have a transition of power in the manner envisioned by the Constitution. The constitutional principles prevailed in certification of the election and transition of administrations. That is a truly significant fact that we can’t take for granted.

Despite one’s view of politics or the election results, the inauguration and the fact it occurred in the traditional manner (apart from changes caused or necessitated by the pandemic) was inspiring, and we must acknowledge the significance and importance of a peaceful transition which makes us optimistic about the future of our republic and the rule of law.
