A $2.75 million settlement in a Monmouth County medical malpractice case concerning a birth injury, Huemer-Sanfilippo v. Rattigan, was approved by the court on Feb. 17.

According to counsel and court documents, plaintiff Cassie Huemer-Sanfilippo was admitted to Jersey Shore Medical Center on June 27, 2015, at 27 weeks pregnant with bleeding, and Inna Santkowsky M.D., using an ultrasound, diagnosed fetal distress, which was confirmed by attending physician Meghan I. Rattigan D.O. Labor was induced and the baby, Gabriel, delivered vaginally in breech position, after which he showed labored breathing and heart beat, and was resuscitated.

Gabriel sustained a brain injury and was in neonatal intensive care for 11 weeks; she now has permanent developmental disabilities and epilepsy; and hydrocephalus, which a buildup of fluid in the brain, requires shunting to drain the fluid, according to the family's lawyers, Charles Cerussi of Cerussi & Gunn in Shrewsbury.
