The family of a corrections officer who died from a cardiac event after allegedly not receiving proper care from a nurse agreed to a $1.5 million settlement on June 14 in their Mercer County medical malpractice suit, Semmon v. University Correctional Health Care.

Nikeelan Semmon, 36, presented to the nurse’s station at Albert C. Wagner Youth Correctional Facility, with complaints of chest pain and trouble breathing on July 1, 2016, and was sent back to work. He later returned to the nurse’s station, overseen by University Correctional Healthcare, which is operated by Rutgers University. There, a corrections officer called an emergency code due to Semmon’s medical condition, according to the suit.
