NJ Law is our annual compilation of important data projects—including Largest Law Firms, which we release this time of year, as well as signature Law Journal projects such as Top 40, Top Personal Injury Awards and Top Lawyer-Lobbyists, which we release over the course of the year and present again here.
Last fall, we wondered what 2021 would bring. We would come to learn that many law firms performed exceptionally well during fiscal 2020, while others didn't. We hoped vaccination against COVID-19 would bring things back to normal, and to some extent, it did, though the delta variant complicated matters. Along the way, we saw lawyers, law firms, courts and other organizations do their best to navigate, persevere, succeed and improve.
The firms included in Largest Law Firms seem to have "held steady" in some ways, with the median firm size for this year's chart (45 attorneys) being very close to last year's (44.5 attorneys). Still, we used average full-time equivalents for 2020 where available, and so any broad changes in firm size might not reveal themselves until next year or after.
