In October, the International Bar Association issued a report on “Mental Well-Being in the Legal Profession: A Global Study.” This followed a global survey of IBA bar members and individuals. The survey results and report may be found at https://www.ibanet.org/Mental-wellbeing-in-the-legal-profession. While the American Bar Association and the New Jersey Bar Association have been seeking to address the issue domestically and locally, the IBA’s work provides a dramatic insight into the nature of the problem as not limited to one jurisdiction, culture, society or even type of legal system. Wellbeing in the legal profession—or more to the point, threats to well-being—is a global issue, and affects not just lawyers but all in the profession.

This is one of the key findings of the surveys and explained in the report. Despite growing attention and dramatic press (‘Big Law Killed My Husband’: An Open Letter From a Sidley Partner’s Widow), the IBA survey results reveal that despite growing awareness and concern, “individual legal professionals do not perceive firms and organisations as responding effectively to issues affecting mental well-being.”
