The new complement of judges, appointed by President Joe Biden, comes after several years when the district court was woefully shorthanded. Federal judiciary officials said the combination of high case volumes, numerous multidistrict litigation cases and a shortage of judges constituted a judicial emergency.

Senators confirmed the nomination of Georgette Castner for a seat on New Jersey's federal bench Thursday by a tight margin of 52-47.
The margin split largely on party lines, although some Republicans, including Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, and Susan Collins, R-Maine, voted for Castner.
